The ADC1000 Altek Door and Turnstile controller is designed to control access to up to 8 entry points by means of a single bi-directional RS232 link.
In practice the RS232 link is usually provided by a COM's port on a PC. The controller is supplied as an OEM product - it requires a suitable applications program running on the PC to respond to the incoming data. When the application decides a door or turnstile should be activated it sends a command to the controller. The controller generates an appropriate 'door open' pulse and routes it to the correct channel.
The 'door open' pulse from the controller may be of either polarity allowing each door to be operated in 'fail open' or 'fail lock' mode. The polarity of the pulse is determined by an 8 way DIP switch on the circuit board. The pulse polarity for each door may be set independently. The pulse period for each door may be varied independently by software. Each door has its own pulse period timer. It is not necessary for a time cycle to be completed before another may be started. The pulse timer is retriggerable. This means that if a pulse command is sent to a door when it already has a pulse pending the new pulse period immediately replaces the old. In this way pulses may be extended indefinitely (Note: It is for the user to decide if the chosen door latch mechanism can handle extended pulses) Similarly a long pulse period may be curtailed prematurely by sending a command for a very short pulse.
The controller is doubly protected against short circuit in the wiring to each door mechanism which may occur under fault conditions. Firstly by thermal sensing electronic control in the final stage of the drive circuitry and in the final resort by fusing in both the primary and secondary wiring. The controller is also protected against high voltage spikes which may be induced in the pulse circuitry.

|The design aims for this controller were to maximize tolerance to fault conditions on the external wiring, the ability to fault-find with the minimum of test gear and overall simplicity.|
|With this type of system the primary overhead cost is engineers' time and the most common cause of 'faults' is physical damage to the external wiring. It was of primary importance to enable an engineer to diagnose this kind of fault quickly and with the minimum of test gear. Equally important - a wiring fault on a single channel should not bring the whole system down.|
|1||Computer connector: Provides a simple but effective bidirectional RS232 serial link to the controlling computer. A Hardware handshake is optional. Simple screw operated, leaf protected, 4 way connector suitable for repeated connect/disconnect cycles without damage to connection wiring.|
|2||DIP Switch: Provides the ability to toggle the polarity of the output pulse to allow operation with 'fail open' or 'fail lock' door mechanisms. One switch per output channel allows the polarity for each door to be selected separately.|
|3||Surface mounted CPU: One of the new generation of risc processors. Just to the right of the CPU a small green LED flashes when the CPU is operating normally. It gives an engineer instant visual confirmation of correct CPU operation.|
|4||Power indicator LEDs: Allows engineer to see immediately if fuse or power to the PCB has failed.|
|5||Secondary power fuses: Most faults in the external wiring will be handled automatically by shutdown of the smart power controller devices. The fuses provide additional security protection.|
|6||Power connector from PSU. Simple and sure disconnection of power from the PCB should the engineer require it.|
|7||Channel active indicator LEDs: Allows the engineer to see immediately when a channel is active or not. Gives indication even if the door latch mechanism is disconnected or faulty. Most faults on this type of system are due to problems with the wiring to door mechanisms. This simple addition allows the engineer to make an immediate visual diagnosis.|
|8||Smart Output devices. These devices incorporate thermal and overload (short circuit) protection. Faults due to short circuits in the wiring to the door mechanisms are generally handled by automatic cutoff of the individual device thus allowing the other doors to continue working as normal. Some other controllers rely on the fuse to protect against this type of fault. However this will disable the whole controller. In other words a single fault on one channel could bring down the whole system.|
